Do School Attendance Zones Matter When Buying a Home in Casper, Wyoming?
The Short Answer
Not the way they do in most cities. Casper is a School Choice town. Natrona County School District #1 (NCSD) is an open enrollment district, which means you can request any of its schools for your student no matter where in the county you live. Your address doesn't decide your school. You do.
I hear this question all the time from buyers moving here from other states, where the house you buy picks the school for you. Here, that's not how it works, and it changes how you can shop for a home.
What School Choice Means When You're Buying
In an attendance zone system, two houses a block apart can be assigned to two different schools, and buyers end up paying attention to boundary lines. In Casper, you don't have to shop that way. You can pick the house that fits your budget, your commute, and your list, then choose a school separately.
That means you're free to look at Casper, Mills, Evansville, Bar Nunn, or acreage outside town and still request the same district schools. The home search and the school decision are two separate steps.
How NCSD School Choice Registration Works
NCSD runs a School Choice Registration period each year for the next school year. Per the district, it's for:
- Students who are new to NCSD
- Incoming kindergarteners
- Students moving from 5th to 6th grade
- Students moving from 8th to 9th grade
- Students changing schools for the next year, at any grade level
Registration happens online through the district's Infinite Campus Parent Portal. New students enter their information first, then complete School Choice Registration in the portal. The district also publishes a Family Guide with information on each school, so you can look at programs before you choose.
The registration window changes from year to year, so check natronaschools.org for the current dates.
If You're Moving Here Mid-Year
A lot of my relocation buyers close in the middle of the school year. If that's you, contact NCSD enrollment directly about your timing. For students transferring in, the district places them at a school shortly before they start, and it doesn't hold a spot at one school while a student is still attending another. Ask the district which schools have room for your student's grade when you're ready to enroll.
Plan for the Drive and the Bus
School Choice means you get to choose. It also means getting there is part of the decision. Casper spreads out, and the school you pick may be across town from the house you buy.
NCSD runs its buses on a hub system built for an open enrollment district. Bus riding isn't automatic. You register for transportation separately through the same Parent Portal, and students are assigned a specific bus and stop. Before you commit to a home, ask the district's Transportation Department at (307) 253-5283 how a student would get from that address to the school you have in mind.
I'd add that drive to your list right next to your work commute. It's easy to forget when you're touring houses.
What I Can and Can't Tell You
I'll tell you how far a home is from any school, and I'll point you to the district for enrollment questions. I won't rank schools or tell you one is better than another. That isn't my call, and Fair Housing law keeps agents out of it for good reason. The district's Family Guide and a visit to the schools themselves are the right places to decide.
This is general information, current as of October 2026. School Choice details are set by NCSD and can change, so confirm anything that matters to your move directly with the district.
Common Questions
Does the house I buy in Casper determine my student's school? No. NCSD is an open enrollment district. You can request any district school regardless of where in the county you live.
Do Mills, Evansville, and Bar Nunn use the same School Choice system? Yes. They're all served by Natrona County School District #1, so the same School Choice Registration applies.
When do I register? During the district's yearly School Choice Registration window, through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Dates change each year, so check natronaschools.org.
Does choosing a school across town include a bus? Not automatically. Transportation is a separate registration, and the district uses a hub system. Call NCSD Transportation at (307) 253-5283 to ask about a specific address.
