8 Surprising Reasons I Call Casper, Wyoming Home

Why I stayed

People I meet from all over the country ask me the same thing: why Casper? I am not a Wyoming native, but I have been here for all but five years of my life, so it feels like home in every way that counts. My family moved here from California when I was five, I grew up in Lander, went to Laramie for college, and landed in Casper for a job after graduation. I will be honest, it took me about a year to love it. Once I built my community here, I did, and I have stayed for more than two decades.

I am Alisha Collins of the Alisha Collins Real Estate Team, and here are the reasons I call Casper home. If any of them resonate, our Wyoming relocation guide and our Casper area page can help you picture your own version of the move.

1 and 2: the right size, with real amenities

Casper's population sits somewhere around 58,000, which to me is the sweet spot. It is big enough for the amenities you want and small enough to keep a genuine small-town feel, less traffic, more open space, and a real sense of community. I call it the Goldilocks size: not too big, not too small.

And for its size, the amenities surprise people. Restaurants that run from barbecue to Italian to steak, local shops and national stores, parks, schools, and healthcare are all right here. Compared to the small town I grew up in, Casper feels like it has everything.

3 and 4: the weather and the community

The weather makes the list, mostly. We get all four seasons, and I love spring, summer, and fall, brief as they can be, and even a good winter day. I will not pretend the wind does not wear on me during the stretches when it feels like it will never quit. But then it does, and those calm, sunny days more than make up for it.

The bigger draw is the people and the community itself. Some of the most genuine, welcoming folks I have ever met live right here, and I found my people in Casper. It really is a place where you can build a community of your own, which is a big part of why it is easy to get involved in the Casper community.

5 and 6: affordability and opportunity

A place to live is not much without an affordable place to live. Housing costs in Casper have tended to run below the national average, which makes buying a first home more attainable here than in a lot of markets, and stretches your budget further. My own son was able to buy a house at 20. Prices move over time, so it is always worth checking current figures before you plan around them.

Opportunity is the other half. Wyoming has a way of rewarding people who look for the opening and are willing to work for it. Casper has a strong streak of entrepreneurs, and I think the business climate here genuinely embraces gumption. Our honest look at the pros and cons of living in Casper weighs both sides.

7 and 8: the activities and the landscape

There is a lot to do here, and yes, much of it is outdoors. The community keeps building more too, with live music, art, and events all year. If you like the outdoors, Casper delivers: youth sports, hunting and fishing, skiing and snowboarding in winter, water skiing in summer, hiking, biking, and camping. One of my own favorites is horseback riding, which you cannot do just anywhere.

And then there is the landscape. I can step outside, look in any direction, and find something worth stopping for, the mountain in the distance, miles of open country, even the seas of sagebrush. The sunsets here are spectacular and the wide-open space has a beauty you do not find in many places. For more of that daily reality, our post on living in Casper covers what nobody tells you before you move.

Your reasons might be different

Of all the places I could live, I chose Casper because I truly love it here. These are just a few of my reasons, and everyone who lands here ends up with their own. Whether you are drawn by the space, the affordability, the community, or something else entirely, the point is finding the place that fits your life.
